While France struggles to accommodate its rapidly changing demographics, Muslims in the country find themselves struggling to be accepted as both
French and Muslim. They want equal rights of citizenship such as equal opportunity and cultural acceptance while also being able to assert their
religious identity through Islamic practices in the public space. Yet the French society's emphasis on secularism has made this integration for
French Muslims increasingly more difficult. Similarly, the community's own limited socio-economic development and weak organizational capacity has
further restricted this integration. As ISPU scholar Moushumi Khan points out, it is clear that France and its Muslim citizens must find ways to reconcile these ongoing tensions in order to avoid future clashes.
